Member's Health

Members health is very important to the workshop committee. Our dust extractor is beneficial to members who may suffer from respiratory diseases. Sunscreen cream, insect repellent, safety goggles, ear muffs, cold water, gloves and various other items are also provided.

Mens Shed Workshop Operations

The Mens Shed workshop is fitted with a dust extractor, two commercial external fans and two internal commercial fans which help maintain a less dusty environment. Operation procedures for all powered machinery is printed and attached to each machine. OH&S procedures are fully complied with and all new members receive an induction explanation on joining the workshop.

Mens Shed Workshop Management

The Mens Shed workshop is run as a program.. The management of the workshop is controlled by the workshop sub committee consisting of:

  1. Chairman
  2. A workshop shed captain.
  3. Workshop health, safety and training officer
  4. Workshop projects and maintenance officer
  5. Workshop secretary

Insurance

The Sub Branch is fully insured through the Australian Men's Shed Association including Public Liability. This insurance also covers members who may be volunteering off site. Similarly, the Sub Branch utility is fully insured against third party and comprehensive incidents and accidents.

Grants

The Sub Branch Treasurer regularly submits grant applications when a suitable grant becomes available and is targeted against a specific project or need. Successful grants have included:

  1. JCCBF grant for a Great Wall utility in 2014.
  2. OLGR grant for an industrial dust extractor in the workshop in 2014.
  3. An Energex grant for a Public Address system for the workshop in 2014.
  4. A grant from the Sisters of Charity Foundation for First Aid training in 2014.
  5. An Australian Men's Shed grant for 26 Solar Panels for the workshop in 2015.
  6. JCCBF grant an extension to the workshop kitchen in 2015.
  7. Anzac Day Trust grants in both 2014 and 2015 for Sub Branch running costs.

Fund Raising

The Sub Branch has actively been fundraising with sales through Facebook marketplace and Gumtree, items made by workshop members, donated items from our community, the produce from our gardens and the refurbishment of furniture. Fundraising is also achieved by Workshop members - special mention to Greg - making spice racks, garden benches, cake stands and made to order items. Donated items are always welcome (on the condition that, if we can’t use or pass them on to veterans/members, we reserve the right to sell/dispose of them), especially tools, and we will accept household items where we may be able to sell or refurbish or support one of our Veterans in need. Otherwise, we support passing them on to lifeline. Our gardens have made some great sales with turmeric being our latest success, this year we hope to have garlic and ginger added to our sales, with efforts thanks to Frank.
